The preliminary annotated listing of moss species in California is an ongoing research effort conducted by Stephen P. Rae. As such, it is presented for your review and comment. Please send your comments regarding additions, deletions, nomenclature, errors, etc., to the author.
Preliminary Status Defined
The listing is a point in time publication disclosing research results up to 1997. The research since then has been largely supplanted by the efforts of Dan Norris and Jim Shevock. Current research efforts by the author focus on the moss flora of Napa County California. This research is intended to supplement the generalized, statewide efforts by Norris and Shevock by clarifying floristics and ecology of mosses within the County at a detail not possible in a statewide effort. The author is supporting the efforts of Norris and Shevock at UC, JEPS.
The listing is derived from three sources: publications, herbarium records, and personal communications. Moss Flora of North America by Grout is established as the benchmark publication after which publications have been searched. Earlier distribution reports cited within Grout are annotated with Grout (MFNM). Nomenclature generally follows Crum, Anderson, and Steere (1973), unless otherwise indicated .
The author appreciates the taxonomic and nomenclatural comments received from bryologists following distribution of the random-access puch card key to the genera of California mosses (Rae, 1976) and the annotated checklists of California moss species (Rae 1975, 1977, 1980). This listing is an appendix to Phytosociology of Mosses in the Napa River Watershed, California (with appendices on a California species checklist and random-access identification key to the genera), a doctoral dissertation in Botany under preparation for submission to University of California at Davis.
The listing is the first published comprehensive revision since Koch (1950), including taxa reported since that date as well as corrections. Species newly described, whose nomenclature has been revised or which have been reassigned since 1973 and the Mniaceae do not follow Crum, Anderson, and Steere (1973). In a few cases the author has followed nomenclature other than Crum, Anderson, and Steere (1973) for purposes of taxonomic clarity. The listing does not include taxa whose position, occurrence, or determination has been questioned by authorities after 1950. Taxa for which additional occurrence documentation is desired are listed separately at the end. Please note that the efforts of Dan Norris and Jim Shevock largely supercede this report.
The listing includes 414 taxa distributed among 126 genera. Grout (1928-1940) reported on 265 taxa while Koch (1950) reported on 317 taxa. Although several of the entries reflect newly recognized species or subspecies, the majority of the recently added taxa likely result from increasingly active bryologists and their collaborators within California.
Organization
The species listing is annotated in three ways to indicate the source of data for a California record: publication (ie., Koch, 1950), herbarium specimen (ie., Kowalski 76A (CANM)), or personal communication (ie., Crum, pers. comm.). Cited publications are included within the dissertation bibliography. Herbarium specimens are cited by collector, collection number, and repository (in parentheses, according to Index Herbariorum). The repository S.P.RAE is the private moss herbarium of the author. Personal communications include collection records, letters, determinations, and unpublished species lists made available to me by bryologists either active in California or authorities on taxa occurring within California.
Questionable Reports
Both Scofield (pers. comm.) and Steere (pers. comm.) question the validity of Aulacomnium heterostichum in California. Scofield points out that phytogeographically, the moss does not belong in the Pacific Northwest flora. Scofield (pers. comm.) similarly rejects Hypnum imponens. However, Hermann (pers. comm.) has collected Aulocomnium heterostichum in northern California. The validity of California records for Buxbaumia aphylla is challenged by Steere (pers. comm.). Koch (1950) lists Climacium dendroides on the basis of early citations by Grout which were superceded in Moss Flora of North America. In any case, Norris in 1975 (pers. comm.) did not believe that C. dendroides occurs on the Pacific Coast. However, the author located a herbarium packet of C. dendroides documenting a California record in the University of California herbarium (UC). Lawton (1971, pers. comm.) reports Callicladium haldanianum in California; Crum (pers. comm.) considers the report an error in the recording of collection data. Meanwhile, Kowalski (pers. comm.) reports his recent collection of C. haldanianum in California. Pursell (1976) clarifies the systematic position of western North America collections previously assigned to Fissidens taxifolius as being sufficiently distinct to warrant recognition as a species, Fissidens aphelotaxifolius, for which a Siskiyou County record is cited. In a paper on Sierra Nevadan plant succession, Rundel (1975) reports several collections of Grimmia bicolor and Grimmia unicolor. However, Rundel (pers. comm.) confirms that the G. bicolor citation is a typographical error (actually G. unicolor) that was not caught in proofs. Hypnum subimponens, although questioned by Scofield (pers. comm.), is included according to a citation by Lawton (1971). According to Crum and Anderson (1955) the California report of Physcomitrella patens (Koch, 1950) , while noting differences between eastern and western North American collections, is actually based upon materials subsequently determined to be Physcomitrella californica. Crum (pers. comm.) advises caution in including Vesicularia amphibola as it is an exotic probably collected only in nurseries and greenhouses. Finally, the revision of the Mniaceae by Koponen (1968) is followed although the combination Leucolepis acanthoneura is acknowledged to have priority over Leucolepis menziesii (Crum, pers. comm.). To simplify the listing and in recognition of the bundled nature of the various parts of the publication involved, the many taxa included based upon citation within Moss Flora of North America by Grout are annotated with (MFNA) rather than the various dates of publication of the individual parts of the flora. Norris and Shevock have detailed significant numbers of similar corrections and clarifications in their report scheduled for publication soon in Madrono.
Coordination with Research by Norris and Shevock
This report is a preliminary checklist based on research current to 1997. The efforts of Dan Norris and Jim Shevock on the moss flora of California have revealed additional genera and species, as well as new species, and revisions to the taxonomy and nomenclature of already reported taxa. Consequently, this report is a historical document and should not be cited as a definitive listing of species.
